Career Services Advisor – Automotive – Colorado Springs Campus
“I’m very much a believer in servant leadership and learning. This is especially effective as a career services advisor where my job is to serve the students, listening along the way in order to guide them throughout their journey.” – Joe Zeman
Get to know Joe…
Joe considers listening the key to problem solving, motivation, conflict resolution and essentially all relationship building. For example, when coaching and counseling students, he first takes the time to really listen to students to understand all the underlying issues, then he determines the best course of action in moving forward. He believes the key to successful career advising is to come up with a plan with students vs. students working without help from others. IntelliTec Career Services is here to help them all the way from the start of school to graduation and beyond.
What led you to this career field?
I love the idea of helping others in their career search, assessment, and job placement. My lifelong love of education and my desire to serve others is my main motivation. Moving forward in a new career is a very important financial, life changing, social and emotional adjustment. I find when I help others I also learn quite a bit at the same time, and wow, what a rush that can be!
What would you tell a student who was on the fence about attending a program of at IntelliTec?
Assess it carefully. IntelliTec College is a wonderful school that provides a true private, career related education where you are specifically prepared for immediately beginning work at a job in your field. Students learn both in the classroom and with hands on specific training for the skills needed to acquire, maintain, and grow in a job field directly related to something they love. Learning and working is a lifelong commitment and there is no better way as a first step beyond high school than what this school has to offer.
Have you faced a difficult/challenging time in your life? If yes, how did you resolve the issue?
I have had several, and the best way I faced them was to admit to my faults, get the support of others, learn from them, and move on. Not hiding it, not sweeping it away, but facing it head on through family, self, spiritual, and emotional learning and practice and support daily.
Share something unique about yourself you believe might help a student get to know you outside of school.
I play guitar and sing, mostly acoustic, covering songs of Bruce Springsteen, Tim McGraw, John Fogerty, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willy Nelson. I also love outdoors and take 2-4 mile hikes in the spring and early summer with my family.
