Pueblo, Colorado – 85 diverse and proud IntelliTec College graduates walked down the stage at the Pueblo Convention Center on Saturday, September 17th. After 18 months or less of specialized career training, graduates ranging from 19-79 years are excited to pursue positions in the medical, wellness and personal appearance career fields.
The graduates earned Associate of Occupational Studies Degrees or Professional Certificates and have or can become medical assistants, medical administrative assistants, dental assistants, massage therapists and cosmetologists. They could join those before them in the joy of earning a career they can truly be proud of.
Councilman Atencio Promotes Community Involvement
Graduates and guests enjoyed a few words of wisdom from guest speaker, City Councilman Lawrence Atencio. He spoke of “giving back to their community”. Career Services Advisor Jeanette Garcia was thrilled to hear him talk about how “their achievement of that day had raised the bar for the entire community through their commitment to education and their completion of that education”.
Awards: Student of Firsts, Friendly Faculty Member, Passionate Dean
The award for Faculty of the Year went to Shelley Neighbors, Clinical Skills Instructor for Medical Assisting. She was chosen by the graduates through a vote because of her extensive knowledge of her field, noted interest in her students, the extra tutoring she offers to students and her approachability.
The title of Student of the Year was awarded to Antonio Cedillo, a student in the Administrative Assisting program who graduated with his Associates of Occupational Studies Degree. He was chosen for his “tremendous growth” in his field of study. Career Services Advisor Jeanette Garcia describes him as “a nontraditional student, being a male, (and) the first in his family to graduate from college”.
The Spirit Award went to Dr. Sandy Gecewicz, the Dean of Faculty. Dr. Gecewicz was chosen because she “epitomizes the IntelliTec way and R.I.T.E. values; goes above and beyond trying to make the instructional program relevant and full of rigor for students and staff; provides meaningful professional development; communicates in a timely manner; is respectful of others (and) works tirelessly for all of us,” says Career Services Advisor Jeanette Garcia.
