‘Daddy Daughter Hair Do Day’ on Valentine’s Day in Pueblo, CO Proves Dads Aren’t All Thumbs
Pueblo, Colorado – The Cosmetology School Salon at IntelliTec College of Pueblo hosted two free hair styling sessions on Valentine’s Day to dads who needed a little help with their daughter’s dos. Twelve pairs of fathers and daughters attended this free event, receiving hair tutorials and sharing a special time together.
“Dads made a ‘date’ of it. Many took their daughters out to lunch afterward to show off their new dos,” according to Peggy Gunther, IntelliTec College of Pueblo Cosmetology Program Supervisor.Pueblo Dads attend IntelliTec College’s ‘Daddy Daughter Hair Do Day’ Workshop on Valentine’s Day, held at the school’s Cosmetology Salon with recently famed Greg Wickherst and daughter Izzy .
The Story of Wickherst’s Recent Fame Doing Daughter’s Hair
The event came about when IntelliTec Admissions Representative Greg Wickherst approached Gunther for some basic hair techniques. “I couldn’t even do a simple pony tail,” laughs Wickherst, “but once I started working with Ashley Rivera [one of IntelliTec’s Cosmetology recent graduates] I learned how to style not just a pony tail but braids, French braids and even a bun.”
Wickherst thought he’d share his newly acquired skills with other struggling dads by posting hair-do tutorials on Facebook, and before he knew it, local and international media wanted to share his story. Even Rachael Ray interviewed him (the segment will air Friday, February 20, 2014). “I’m a guy who shaves his head, so hair just wasn’t something I knew a lot about. But I knew where to go to get the help I needed,” Wickherst adds.
When IntelliTec College of Pueblo asked him to participate in the Daddy Daughter Hair Do Day, he happily accepted. He knew the event was more than just a dad learning to style his daughter’s hair; it created another opportunity for a father and daughter to bond. “Instead of watching TV we sit together and I do her hair. I want her to look back at these times with special memories,” says Wickherst.
Pueblo Dads Follow Wickherst’s Example to Spend Quality Time with Daughters
IntelliTec’s beauty school students Sharnel Pike, Estrella Trujillo, Jolene Phillips and recent graduate Ashley Rivera provided the much-appreciated advice to dads learning the basics of styling hair at the event. Gunther explains, “You could see how grateful the dads were, and their newfound respect for those who style hair. And the students loved the event as well. They had fun mentoring the dad’s, plus it was their chance to pay it forward.”
Toddlers to pre-teen daughters sat patiently as their dads learned the fundamentals; some more adventurous dads even tackled a few more intricate hairstyles. “It was very touching to see the dads take the time to do this for their daughters. Everyone could see how much these dads loved their girls,” shares Gunther.
Wickherst was especially moved when one father brought in his terminally ill daughter for the Daddy Daughter Hair Do Day. “He simply wanted to have another way to spend one-on-one time with her while she’s still with us. That brought tears to my eyes,” he adds quietly.
