Local College Students Mentor 8th Grade Students about Life and Career ChoicesPueblo, Colorado – “MyLife” Workshop 8th Grade Student Participants, Class of 2015
Pueblo, CO – IntelliTec College of Pueblo will once again participate in the Multicultural Youth Leadership Initiative For Excellence or “My Life” Workshop on February 10th.
The workshop, sponsored by the Emerging Leadership Development Program through El Pomar, creates a leadership experience for 75 Pueblo 8th graders of all ethnic heritages that enhances civic engagement, fosters leadership, encourages education, and promotes career and professional development.
Students and staff from IntelliTec College of Pueblo will present the “My Choices” segment of the event from 9:15-11:45 a.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center. Additional program sessions will be held at various institutions of higher education and businesses throughout the community.
In addition to an onsite local business resource day, there will be various program sessions for 8th graders in the “My Life” Workshops. Programs are designed to develop leadership potential and encourage a strong commitment to community involvement in Pueblo. They include:
- My Choices (making good decisions)
- My Community (getting involved in your community)
- My Future (college/career preparation)
- My Integrity (values)
IntelliTec Student and Instructor Involvement
“IntelliTec is one of the postsecondary sponsors invited to participate as a technical trade school option for students to consider,” states Jeanette Autobee-Garcia, Career Services Director at IntelliTec College of Pueblo.
Program supervisors will present a mini lesson followed by a hands-on activity. For example, IntelliTec students will demonstrate EKG (electrocardiogram) and procedures for administering injections as part of the Medical Assistant presentation. In addition, participants will have vitals such as height, weight, and blood pressure taken and recorded upon arriving.
IntelliTec’s initial involvement included program supervisors speaking about their respective programs and passing out curriculum information. Over the last eight years the College’s participation has grown to include student presenters.
Student Helping Students
Garcia explains, “[IntelliTec College] students participating in the MyLife session share their own experiences and the benefits of hands-on learning in their individual programs.”
The experience promotes a mutual learning experience for both sets of “students.” Teaching others is the ultimate step of knowledge mastery, and “this experience confirms for our own students how much they know and understand about the career training they have received,” adds Garcia.
Furthermore, Garcia believes, “As IntelliTec students share their own educational and even life experiences, the 8th grade participants really listen; hearing first-hand accounts from older students with similar backgrounds makes an impact. With MyLife’s focus on education, choices and decision-making, the 8th graders can truly relate.”
