Medical assistants help health practitioners perform administrative and clinical tasks to keep offices running smoothly. The duties of a medical assistant vary from office to office, depending on the size of the office, location and the practitioner’s specialty.
In large practices, medical assistants tend to specialize in one area of expertise. In small practices, they perform a wide range of tasks designed to help the office run as smoothly as possible day-to-day.
As the healthcare industry expands because of technological improvements, the growth and aging of the population, and advances in medicine, there will be an increased need for all healthcare workers.
Many medical assistants complete one- or two-year educational programs. One-year programs often result in a certificate or diploma, while two-year programs typically result in an Associate degree. Medical assistant students learn a variety of skills including anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, transcription, recordkeeping and insurance processing.
