We'd like to introduce you to our Refrigeration & HVAC Technician Program Supervisors

Ivan Smith

Program Supervisor
Refrigeration & HVAC Technician

Ivan Smith photo

Ivan likes to be an encouraging presence in students’ lives and inspire them to approach life with the same positive outlook. He wants them to recognize that even in their darkness, the light is no dimmer for them than it’s been for him. Everyone faces struggles, but we have to move forward knowing that to attain success you have to hurdle a few disappointments.

  • Please share a memorable moment/success story you’ve experienced at IntelliTec. As Director of Education, I had an opportunity to help a student who had not experienced a lot of success in his life. He came to me in tears because he felt he was failing his final class. After reviewing his grades and speaking with the instructor it occurred to me that the student was just afraid of the success he was about to achieve. We talked for a while and he thanked me for the support. Later that year at graduation, he introduced me to his family. What a great experience.
  • What are some of the rewards you’ve experienced on the job? I really enjoy seeing students who arrive at IntelliTec unsure of the journey ahead, but slowly gain confidence and increase their skill levels. They may have even doubted their ability to finish, and yet there they are, facing their families with huge smiles on their faces at graduation.
  • What led you to a career in HVAC? I was an aircraft mechanic in the military. When I left I looked into IntelliTec’s HVAC program and felt it was a good fit based on my previous experience. I liked that once I gained experience I could essentially work on my own.
  • If you had to share a single piece of advice for prospective students in your department, what would it be? Continue to expand your horizons and see graduation as a beginning of lifelong learning.

Robert Schroeder

Program Supervisor
Refrigeration & HVAC Technician

Grand Junction Campus

"As an HVAC teacher, I hope to pass down my passion and strong work ethic to the next generation so they see how hard work and a ’never quit’ attitude leads to success."

"Everyone makes mistakes, and I have certainly made my share! It’s important to own up to that mistake, learn from it, and try another approach. The bottom line – don’t give up! Employers are impressed by technicians who don’t quit after a failure. "

Get to know Robert...

  • What led you to this program of study? It started with an interest in AC/Refrigeration way back in high school. During my senior year I began taking classes through the mail (not online!), and I was hooked. I loved working with my hands, tinkering with things, and this field was a perfect fit for me.
  • What would you tell a student who was on the fence about attending a program of study in your department at IntelliTec? I’d first ask them where they see themselves in five years. So many students don’t always look that far ahead, and the beauty of HVAC is that it’s a fast-growing industry with unlimited potential. In the next 10-15 years an entire workforce will retire, and a new generation will need to be trained to replace them. That’s a lot of opportunity.
  • How do you motivate struggling students? Since my experience in HVAC originates not as a teacher but as a technician in the field, I take the direct and personal approach. I tell them I’ve been exactly in their shoes: school & work each full-time, married and raising a family, and bills to pay. Challenges aren’t the end of the world. They are an opportunity to slow down and take advantage of all the helping hands that are offering a number of services at IntelliTec.
  • What career advice would you share with a student about to graduate? Slow down and think things through. Don’t be in a rush when making big decisions, because you’ll only end up making a rash decision. And remember, my door is always open if you have questions after graduation.
