What is it about this career field you enjoy so much?
I really love helping individuals develop employability skills to obtain jobs in their desired careers. Most students aren’t aware of all the steps to secure employment. There’s an entire framework to the process and sometimes it can take a little time and patience. I feel it’s my job to talk grads through the progression. Some think the end point is submitting their resume/application, but that just sets in motion the next set of steps…which hopefully lead to an interview.
Please share a memorable moment/success story you’ve experienced at IntelliTec.
I had the opportunity to help a single mom obtain employment. This entailed a lot of moral support as well as assistance with job applications. About six months after graduation she landed a job in her field. What an exciting moment for both of us! Her self-esteem soared. And though we all knew it, she finally felt like she was worth something after all the let-downs in her life. The icing on the cake was the doctor she worked for loved her.
How do you motivate students who are struggling with the job search?
Students generally reach out when things get dire, and at that point their stress levels are running pretty high. My goal is to meet with them right away and guide them through a number of online applications. This helps them feel confident that their skills are still marketable. I try to get them to focus on the bigger picture, and not let little things get in the way.
What career advice would you share with a student about to graduate?
Believe in yourself and show employers just how much you have to offer. Your newly acquired skills are not only marketable but sought after. With the right attitude you’ll find a job you want.
