IntelliTec College Graduate William Huntley Learns: ‘Working Smarter, Not Harder’ Is the Key to Success in His HVAC Career
A lifetime of acquired construction skills and U.S. Army experience as a combat engineer led William Huntley to pursue what he believes a “no brainer” career path as a heating, ventilation, air conditioning & refrigeration technician.
Combine this with a stint in the fast food industry after leaving the military, and Huntley determined it was not a matter of “if” but “when.”
“I was literally living at the poverty level though I worked 10-12 hour days. I just couldn’t get ahead, and it was obvious pretty quickly I needed to make a change for myself and my family,” says Huntley.
A 4.0 GPA Takes Sheer Determination and a Single-Minded Focus
Huntley promised his wife that he would not just complete his Refrigeration & HVAC Technician degree but do so with honors. He realized quickly that he was not only good at school, but that he really loved it. He set a goal to graduate in the top 5% of his class at IntelliTec College in Grand Junction, and he met it with relative ease.
“I was one of those punk kids who didn’t care about anything. But once I realized I could do this [school], there was nothing that was going to stop me,” says Huntley.
A Genuine Passion for the HVAC-R Industry Jump Starts Huntley’s Mornings
Once Huntley was near graduation, he immediately went in search of employment and found it with Grand Mesa Mechanical, Inc.
His belief in the light at the end of the tunnel kept him focused on what his real goal was: a better paying job. Period. He wasted no time in securing the job, but the bigger reward is that he loves it.
“I get up every day and can’t wait to get in my truck to go to work; I love what I do. My wife noted that not many people feel this way about their job, and the fact that I do means I picked one heckuva career!” exclaims Huntley.
